    The award-winning graphics and data visualization team at the Los Angeles Times seeks an experienced and ambitious journalist to help us lead visual investigations.

     

    We want to inform our audience and demonstrate how policies, climate change and natural disasters impact our physical world. We want to offer context and background to tragedies. And we want to tell the stories of the people affected.

    Responsibilities

    This is a new role on our team that will:

    • Apply the rigors of journalism to video and photographic evidence
    • Use public records laws to obtain videos, audio and photos for investigations
    • Research, analyze and construct data that enlighten and inform
    • Display a competitive drive, collaborative spirit and a proactive approach to daily work
    • Mentor and lead the team in visual investigations and deliver creative approaches to visual storytelling

    Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications include:

    • A portfolio that shows a clear design sensibility, contains standalone graphics and visualizations and demonstrates an understanding storytelling on multiple platforms, especially mobile
    • Demonstrated use of satellite imagery and video evidence in daily or project-based journalism
    • Fluency with Adobe Illustrator and other Creative Cloud applications
    • An ability to put HTML, CSS and JavaScript to use nearly every day in a deadline-driven newsroom
    • Expertise in a favorite tool or programming language for data and GIS analysis
    • Eight to 10 years of professional journalism experience

    We’re especially excited by the skills, specialties and experience you could bring to the team, which might include:

    • Web and 3D modeling
    • Expert-level skills in QGIS/PostGIS/GDAL
    • AR/VR programming
    • Game design and programming
    • After Effects and animation experience
    • Sophisticated and thoughtful illustration

    This position is classified as Journalist Graphics & Data II and is included in the Los Angeles Times Guild.
