    The Los Angeles Times is seeking an organized and tenacious project manager to support the growth of our rapidly evolving newsroom.

     

    This is a new position that sits at the intersection of journalism and technology. The successful candidate must be passionate about making our journalism stronger by continuously improving our newsroom’s tools, systems and processes.

     

    The project manager will have significant leeway to suggest areas of focus and priorities, while working closely with journalists and programmers. Current priorities include content management system (CMS) improvements and deployments and the adoption of technology to improve news planning and organizational practice. Over time, the focus will expand to include training, internal communication and technical projects.

    Responsibilities

    If you join us, you will:

    • Identify and roll out newsroom tools and processes, empowering our journalists with the latest technology
    • Spot problems in our workflow and planning, and help fix them
    • Help our newsroom to become more effective and more digitally proficient
    • Represent our journalists in making decisions alongside software developers, product managers, UX designers and data analysts
    • Implement integrations of editorial tools including Wibbitz, Videolicious, scheduling software and custom-built programs
    • Manage internal documentation and train journalists in new tools and platforms
    • Set project roadmaps and ensure deadlines are met
    • Include appropriate stakeholders in decision-making

    Qualifications

    You will need:

    • Passion about the news and its role in serving our democracy
    • Optimism about the changes sweeping through the news industry
    • Versatility in working across words, images, video and code
    • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace
    • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent communication skills with people at all levels of technical sophistication
    • Understanding of digital and print publishing
    • At least two years of project management experience (formal or informal)
    • Scrum Master certification or equivalent experience
    • Knowledge of Jira, Confluence and other project management software

     

    The job is classified as Multiplatform Editor-Newsroom Project Manager within the Los Angeles Times Guild. This position could involve occasional early morning, night and weekend work.
