The Los Angeles Times is looking for an SEO Editor with experience in journalism, search engine optimization and editorial planning. We’re searching for journalists who are passionate about helping our journalism reach its largest possible audience through search and discovery — not only in California and the West, but around the nation and world. You will be part of the digital transformation of our newsroom and a reorientation of The Times around our most important mission: serving our readers.

If you join us, you will:

    • Be part of a dynamic, energetic, inclusive and inspiring team of journalists, who cover every topic from the White House to climate change, from Hollywood to the Dodgers
    • Reinforce the importance of search engine optimization across our newsroom, and help reporters and editors expand the reach of our work
    • Help shape the presence of our report on search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo
    • Alert editors to stories that might be assigned, based on high search interest, and inform editorial teams when they are performing well on search
    • Track progress of our stories on search and providing headline update recommendations
    • Monitor our live feed of articles to spot opportunities where we can improve on search-focused stories
    • Monitor Chartbeat to identify recirculation opportunities (linking within articles) on top-performing stories on search
    • Identify opportunities to resurface and refresh older stories that can provide an answer to users’ search queries
    • Utilize keyword planner and Google Trends to identify the best key terms to use for our stories
    • Anticipate news events and areas of expertise, to lay groundwork for search authority
    • Guide SEO strategy for breaking news events
    • Provide guidance on publication timing of articles for highest visibility on search

    • Passion about the news and its role in serving our democracy
    • Optimism about the changes sweeping through the news industry
    • Versatility in working across words, images, video and even code
    • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace
    • At least 2 years of experience in search-engine optimization
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Deep understanding of best practices on search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo
    • Proficiency in search tools like SEMRush, Moz and Google Search Console
    • Ability to collaborate with journalists, audience engagement editors, product developers, data analysts and UX designers

The job is classified as Multiplatform Editor — SEO Editor within the Los Angeles Times Guild and is based in our El Segundo, Calif., newsroom. Occasional night and weekend work is required.
